The Seelbach Hotel
Ah, a beloved long weekend had arrived...my mom and I both had an extra day off on a long weekend and we intended to take advantage of it. We looked at a map and all of the big cities that we could easily visit over the course of two days, and since neither of us had spent much time in Louisville, that is where we headed. A friend of my moms gave us a list of some cool places to check out and the list was the Seelbach hotel and one simple note...F. Scott Fitzgerald was here. I instantly added it to the list. Then, when checking out hotels, I was absolutely delighted to discover that this hotel was in our budget. We booked it.
Upon arriving, we discovered a site of literary history, human history, gangsters, and even ghosts. Some of my favorite topics all in one place. When you first enter the hotel from the front doors, the valet greet you and are the most helpful and as you enter the doors you are instantly swept away into a world that once existed here. It is stunning and you can feel the history. It was a great experience.
You can find out plenty of history online in articles and videos, but I highly recommend asking the front desk for a tour, if someone is available it is an experience not to be missed. The tour guide showed us where Fitzgerald once drank and met a variety of characters and became inspired to write his famous novel. You will also see the areas of the hotel where gangsters and bootleggers spent their prohibition years, including a room where Al Capone played poker and the tunnels which he used to escape. You will also see where a lady in blue ghost was seen and the elevator shaft where an actual lady in blue fell to her death. You will also see the area of the hotel in the downstairs where many a party was held and where prohibition fun flourished.
The hotel is full of details that remind how beautifully historic it is, which is especially enthralling considering this hotel was built in 1905. It was such a great place to rest during our trip to Louisville, and while I didn't get to see a lady in blue in the night...I did have a wonderful time and I cannot recommend a stay at The Seelbach Hotel more.
